Working Rules & Guidelines for CLAIHR Chapters

  1. Canadian Lawyers for International Human Rights (CLAIHR) is a national not-for-profit, non-governmental organization. CLAIHR’s mission is to promote human rights globally through legal education, advocacy and law reform.
  2. The Board of Directors (hereinafter the “Board”) administers the affairs of CLAIHR. Between meetings of the Board, the working Board is responsible for the conduct of affairs of CLAIHR and for implementing decisions of the Board. One member of the Board is designated as a Student Coordinator to work with CLAIHR Student Chapters.
  3. Local Student Chapters of CLAIHR may be established in any city or region of Canada with the consent of the Board. To be recognized as such, a CLAIHR Chapter must submit a statute to the Board which includes a commitment to abide by the Working Rules and Guidelines of CLAIHR.
  4. Student Chapters must at all times act in accordance with the Working Rules and Guidelines as adopted from time to time by the Board.
  5. Each CLAIHR Chapter must ensure that all of its activities fall within the stated objectives and mandate of CLAIHR. In particular, Chapters cannot engage in politically partisan activities of any kind.
  6. Chapters are encouraged to develop projects and activities on their own and in conjunction with other Chapters. However, approval of the Board must be obtained prior to commencing any project or activity other than the following:
    • assisting with projects already approved by the Board;
    • organizing speakers or workshops on international human rights issues; and
    • conducting legal research on international human rights issues for distribution to other CLAIHR members and chapters.
    Prior to issuing any research paper, article or submission, or making any presentation to an educational institution, governmental organization or any other external organization, it is important that the Student Chapter obtain the approval of the Board of CLAIHR via the Student Coordinator.
  7. Chapters are expected to be financially self-sustaining, and are encouraged to make an annual financial contribution to CLAIHR’s National Office through fundraising activities.
  8. The CLAIHR logo and name cannot be used on any material for any purpose (including, but not limited to, clothing, Internet sites, advertising and marketing materials and media releases) without the prior consent of the Board.
  9. Prior to each meeting of the Board, each Chapter representative should discuss the activities of his or her group with, and present any questions, concerns or proposals for which Board approval is required, to his or her respective Student Coordinator for presentation at the meeting.
  10. One member of each Chapter may participate in meetings of the Board. Any costs of such attendance will be at the expense of such Chapter.
  11. The Board may deprive any member, Chapter of membership in CLAIHR and the right to use CLAIHR’s name upon notice if, in the Board’s opinion, such member, Chapter does not act within the spirit of CLAIHR’s objectives, mandate and Working Rules and Guidelines.
